Let's talk about Perserverance

So in my first Posting we talked about How do we change?

Change takes Intention and Follow through.....This is where Perseverance comes in.

I found a great article that puts Perseverance in some perspective with some adjustment by yours truly.

What is perseverance?
  • Perseverance is commitment, hard work, patience, endurance.
  • Perseverance is being able to bear difficulties calmly and without complaint.
  • Perseverance is trying again and again.
You show perseverance when you ...
  • Give up your tv time or other activities that waste your time.
  • Try a new activity, new exercise program, diet, spiritual practice, or attitude change that is very difficult but you don't give up-You have your Eyes on the Prize. Only you know what that means for you.
  • Have a learning disability or a personal life struggle but keep moving forward even when discouraged
  • Come from a home or a relationship or work situation where there is in-fighting and unhappiness but you make the best of it or create some spiritual resolve to be free of your situation.
  • Have missed a week of school or work or a commitment but you work hard to catch up
  • Are at the end of a difficult race or project or goal but you cross the finish line anyway
  • Save money and make sacrifices to buy something. Remember the difference between a need and a want.
  • Spend hours practicing on your music, hobby, or personal endeavor.
  • Study and work hard to raise your grades, or build character
  • Try out for something you weren't successful at the first time. it takes time to find your groove.
Proverbs and maxims
  • Failure is the path of least persistence.
  • All things will come round to him who will but wait. (Longfellow)
  • Only those who have the patience to do simple things perfectly will acquire the skill to do difficult things easily.
  • Work hard and give it your best shot; never be a quitter. (Charley Taylor)
More quotes on perseverance
  • Victory belongs to the most persevering. (Napoleon Bonaparte)
  • Hitch your wagon to a star. (Emerson)
  • To persevere, trusting in what hopes he has, is courage to a man. (Euripides)
  • You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try. (Beverly Sills)
  • Many strokes overthrow the tallest trees. (John Lyly)

  • Beethoven (composer) - was deaf
  • Ray Charles (musician) - is blind
  • Thomas Edison (inventor) - had a learning problem

Put perseverance into action
  • When something starts to bother you, wait as long as you can before you express frustration.
  • When something doesn't work right, try again and again.
  • Don't lose your temper when something upsets you.
  • Always finish what you start.
  • Keep working at something that is difficult until you complete it.
  • Don't give up on difficult jobs or situations.
  • Focus on someone or something that ordinarily makes you lose your patience and try to understand it (and don't "lose it").
  • Work a little harder or a few minutes longer on a task that you do not like.
  • Resources, Resources, Resources-If you do not know what to do-find help for yourself. There are so many organizations and People who are willing to support you along the way-free and fee-based.

Not so cool ways to cope
  • Escape or avoid your problems.
  • Blame yourself.
  • Blame other people.

  • Blame other things, forces, or powers.

  • Face and accept what happens in your life.
  • Express your feelings.
  • Write about your feelings.
  • Get help if you need it.
  • Try to make it better.
  • Take good care of yourself.
  • Learn and grow from your experiences, including the ones that hurt.
Activities
  • Write in your journal about difficult situations and how you handled them without giving up.
  • Write a poem about suffering, what you can learn from it, how to face it, how not to hurt others, or anything else about obstacles.
  • Collect stories, poems, diaries, or quotations by writers about persistence.
  • Brainstorm cures for "the blues."
  • Learn what Galileo (a famous astronomer) or other scientist endured with opposition faced during his or her lifetime.
  • Find out what help is there for people who face difficult situations - counselors, psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, therapists.
  • Create a skit that shows what to do when disaster strikes.
  • Explore the healing power of music.
  • Explore the healing power of exercise.
  • Explore the healing power of pets.
  • Put some extra effort into a project that is difficult and try to improve your skill (like public speaking or learning a dance).

I thought since we are starting a brand new year understanding PERSERVERANCE is really the first key in changing one's life.

Next we will get back to primary food but I thought I would this concept was perfect for the New Year!

Happy New Year everybody!

Before we talk about Food ...how does one make lasting changes?

Welcome to my first installment of
    "Food Talk with Fred".

Yes you have guessed it. I am Fred!

Why is my name a bit slanted? Well it just looks that way because you may not be getting enough Whole Foods in your diet!

Now this Blog is about F-O-O-D! Right?

Well before we get into that topic, we need to begin with the basics..PRIMARY FOOD!

What is Primary Food?

Everything we consider as a source of nutrition is really just a secondary source of nourishment.
The foods you eat are secondary to all the other things that feed you—your relationships, career, spirituality, and exercise routine. Those are the things we call primary foods.
So now back to the subject at handHow do we begin to change our lives? (Let alone the food we eat on a daily basis?)
This has been a fundamental question for mankind throughout the ages. Change?-how do we do it? How does real lasting change occur? How do we break our patterns? We all have our gurus. Some listen to motivational tapes, some do meditation, yoga or breath work. We attend retreats, we get massages, we go to church. Some may just be so invested in our inertia and do absolutely nothing about it.
We have all attempted many of these things or absolutely nothing at all. If we do not change our behaviors, our ideas, and begin questioning why we do the things we do we will never take that first step on the road to health! True lasting health takes work. It takes commitment and discipline.
Our diet is one of the last things to change.
We need to begin by listening to our bodies! What does our body need? What feeds our soul? What motivates us? What are our passions?
The Wisdom of Your Body is the Key to Health!
Let me repeat...
The Wisdom of Your Body is the Key to Health!
The Wisdom of Your Body is the Key to Health!
The Wisdom of Your Body is the Key to Health!

Your body needs only a few things. It needs to sleep, to eat right, to breathe, to move and to have peace with life (people, places, self, things). Your body will tell you when one of these areas needs attention. Listen!

It takes time and practice to learn how to listen to your body.

We are just getting started.....Stay tuned...
